Reflections on the Sands of Time, which...
.......for the age of grace, have all but run out!Sand through the hourglass,
brings all life and works to pass,
do you say alas?
"...I can remember when we once had one of those in my fathers house. The aperture through which the sand runs is so tiny that the upper glass never changes to our eyes it appears that the sand runs out only at the end. And until it does it's not worth thinking about 'til the last moment, when there's NO MORE TIME...there's no more time left to think about it......."Thomas Mann - Death in Venice
"Nae man can tether time or tide".Robbie burns
"Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils".Hector Berlioz
"Time which is the author of authors".Francis Bacon
"Peace with honour, I believe it's peace for our time".Neville Chamberlain
Vladimir: "That passed the time".
Estragon:"It would have passed in any case".
Vladimir: "Yet, but not so rapidly".Waiting for Godot - Samuel Beckett
"Thou know'st 'tis common; all that live must die, passing through nature to eternity."...Hamlet
"We have seen the best of our time: machinations, hollowness, treachery and all ruinous disorders, follow us disquietly to our graves."...King Lear
"What seest though else in the dark backward abysm of time?"...The Tempest
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.Psalms 90:10
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:Hebrews 9:27
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.James 4:14
Time, through the ages, has inspired poets, singers & writers...e.g.
- If I could put time in a bottle.....
- Time has told me....
- Time of no reply.....
- Time, is on my side.....
Sadly, for some...TIME has not always been on their side...as their days have been cut short!
Abide With Me...
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide;
When other helpers fail; and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Swift to it's close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, it's glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O thou who changest not, abide with me.
I need Thy Presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempters power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine Lord; abide with me.
I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death's sting? Where grave thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.
Hold thou Thy Cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;
Heavens morning breaks, and earth's vains shadows flee;
In life in death, O Lord abide with me.
Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)
